Internship Title: Discovery Theater MUSEUM THEATER INTERN

About TSA:                         The Smithsonian Associates advances the Institution’s mission “to increase and diffuse knowledge” through life-enriching educational and cultural experiences inspired by the Smithsonian’s research and collections. Discovery Theater offers the best in live performance for young people that taps into the Smithsonian’s vast resources to present culturally accurate, entertaining programs. We offer dozens of interactive productions that feature puppets, storytellers, dancers, actors, musicians, and mimes.

 Intern Duties:                    

·        Attend meetings, rehearsals, and possible auditions.

·        Generate, edit, publish, maintain, and share content and promotional materials through Facebook, our website, and WordFly.

·        Promote the Discovery Theater and connect with artists and the community primarily through social media and e-mail channels.

·        Generate, edit and update scripts, learning materials, and online content.

·        Explore the Smithsonian, thinking about the potential connection to DT programs.  Share those thoughts with Director in short storyboards or written idea papers.

·        Assist with house management duties and daily operations.

·        Assist in production, artist communication, hospitality, and project management.

·        When possible, interns may help direct, stage manage, and mount productions. 

Professional Development

Opportunities:

·        The intern will be exposed to artistic administration including season planning, developing museum theater pieces, and using theater as an educational tool.

·        The Intern will be exposed to all areas of artistic administration including sales/customer service, office operations, and house and stage managing.

Qualifications:

·        Experience in producing content for and maintaining various social media and digital marketing tools, including Facebook and Wordfly

·        We seek candidates who have strong organizational and communication skills. 

·        Candidate should also be responsible, creative, personable, and resourceful.

·        Must have a professional demeanor, writing ability, and internet research skills.

·        Familiarity with computers, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

·        A background or strong interest in theatre and/or arts education, and working with children is a must!

·        Must be willing to help set-up the theater and load artists in/out.

Seasons:                            Spring (Jan – May), Summer (Jun – July), Fall (Sept - Dec)

 Time Commitment:           30 - 40 hrs/week; 1 full semester – 1 academic year. Part-time availability will also be considered.

 Schedule:                           Weekdays with an occasional weekend day or evening

Compensation:                  All TSA Internships are unpaid and housing is not provided. College credit may be granted, but must be coordinated in advance with the intern's university/college.

Internship Title:            Discovery Theater Technical Intern

Discovery Theater (www.DiscoveryTheater.org), the Smithsonian Institution’s theater for children, is dedicated to offering the best in live educational performing arts for young people,  serving as a gateway to the resources contained in the Smithsonian’s museums, collections, and exhibitions through performances and programs in museums, tours and in-school residencies.  

Intern Duties:  

·        Assist with various aspects of the technical side of theater. 

·        Participate actively in running and preparing for both produced and presented shows for Discovery Theater. Work in one or more of the following areas: stage management, assistant direction, sound, lighting, props & costumes. 

·        May also be called on to assist in office duties, daily operations, artist communication, and hospitality.

 Professional Development

Opportunities:

·        The Technical Intern will receive basic knowledge of the technical theater work as well as insight into the administrative side of Museum Theater. 

·        Beyond regular duties, supervisors will work with Technical Intern’s interests, in  training and networking with the DC theatre community and at the Smithsonian

·        Possible training opportunities include Sound and Lighting Design, Live Mixing Audio (theatrical/concert), QLab, SFX, Isadora, Basic Carpentry, Costuming (technologies, wardrobe and design), Puppetry (design, build and operation), Microsoft Office, Tessitura.

Qualifications:

·        Some experience in relevant Technical Theater. 

·        Should be flexible, creative, a team player, reliable, and have a good work ethic.

·        Display a willingness to assist in load in/out, as artist liaison, and setup/tear down stage and seating on a daily basis.

·        Computer and desktop publishing a plus.
